President Donald Trump signs an executive order to add a secondary name and title to the US Department of Defense

On Friday, September 5, 2025, President Donald Trump did something important. He gave a new, second name to a big government office. This office is called the Department of Defense. Its new second name is "Department of War". The person who leads this office is called the Secretary of Defense. Now, this person also has a second title: "Secretary of War".

These names, "Department of War" and "Secretary of War", were used a long time ago. But in 1947, the name changed to "Department of Defense". Only Congress can officially change names like this. So, "Department of Defense" is still the main name. "Department of War" is a new, extra name.

President Trump talked about this idea before. He told people, "We don't only want to defend our country. We also want to be able to attack." He also said, "When it was called the Department of War, we won everything."
